A Vivint technician comes to your home, surveys your property, recommends a custom system layout, and installs every component professionally. We had Vivint install a 16-piece system in a 4,200 square foot colonial home in suburban Chicago.

The installation appointment lasted 4 hours and 15 minutes. The technician hardwired three outdoor cameras, ran cable through the attic to avoid visible wires, installed door and window sensors with professional-grade adhesive, mounted motion detectors at calculated angles, and configured the Smart Hub panel on the wall by the front entrance. What sets Vivint apart is its camera AI. The Outdoor Camera Pro uses machine learning to identify the difference between a person, a vehicle, a pet, and a random motion event like a tree branch swaying.

When it detects an unfamiliar person on your property, it plays a spoken warning through the camera speaker and illuminates LED lights. During our test, the camera correctly identified a delivery driver, our neighbor walking past, and a stray cat without a single false positive over 18 days.

Vivint sends a Smart Home Pro to your door. Ours arrived on time, wearing a branded uniform, and started with a 20-minute walkthrough of the property. He checked every exterior door, window, and entry point, then sketched a recommended sensor map on his tablet. After the homeowner approved the layout, he drilled, fished cables through walls, and mounted equipment with surgical precision.

The outdoor cameras were hardwired through soffit channels. Interior sensors used professional-grade adhesive rated for 15 years. The Smart Hub panel was wall-mounted with a recessed wiring bracket. The technician tested every sensor individually, verified monitoring center connectivity, walked the homeowner through the app, and explained each feature before leaving.

Vivint's hardware is commercial-grade. The Smart Hub is a 7-inch touchscreen with a 5-megapixel camera, microphone, and speaker built in. It responds instantly to touch inputs with zero lag, the fastest panel in our testing. The Outdoor Camera Pro captures 4K HDR video with a 140-degree field of view, color night vision, and two-way audio.

Its onboard AI processor handles all analytics locally, meaning your camera identifies threats even if your internet connection drops. The Doorbell Camera Pro records in 1664p (2K) with HDR, 180-degree vertical field of view, and package detection. Indoor sensors include recessed door contacts (invisible when installed), pet-immune motion detectors up to 80 pounds, and glass break detectors with a 25-foot range. Vivint also integrates smart locks from Yale and Kwikset, the Nest thermostat, and myQ garage door controllers.

Vivint runs its own in-house monitoring center based in Provo, Utah. This is a significant advantage because Vivint agents are trained exclusively on Vivint systems, resulting in faster and more accurate alarm verification. When your system triggers, the Vivint agent sees your entire system layout on their screen and can identify which specific sensor activated. Average agent response time during our testing was 15 seconds, the fastest in our review lineup.

The Smart Complete plan at $39.99 per month includes 24/7 monitoring, smart home controls, and up to 14 days of video history. The Smart Complete Plus plan at $49.99 per month extends video history to 30 days and adds advanced AI camera features. Both plans include cellular backup, and Vivint covers all hardware repairs and replacements under warranty.

The Vivint app is the most polished home security app we tested. The dashboard shows a real-time floor plan with sensor status overlaid on each zone. Camera feeds load in under 2 seconds with 4K streaming capability on Wi-Fi.

Push notifications are granular: you can configure alerts for specific people, specific cameras, or specific time windows. The app also includes a Guest Access feature that generates temporary codes for house sitters, dog walkers, or cleaning crews. You set the access window, assign the code, and the app revokes it automatically when the period expires.

Live view supports simultaneous multi-camera feeds, displaying up to 4 camera streams on a single screen.
